More Successfull Drillings: Groundwater Mapping and IWRM
In the past, many wells drilled in the area of this project were unsuccessful or gave less yield than expected. This was due to lack of proper hydrogeological and geophysical investigations. Acacia Water delivers (shallow) groundwater mapping and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) services as part of a REACH programme. This approach contributes to more successful drillings in Jimma and Borena Zones in Ethiopia.

Key Takeaways
- The project utilizes hydrogeological and geophysical investigations, particularly groundwater mapping, to increase the success rate of borehole drilling through enrichment of data.
- The initiative aims to improve water access for local communities and schools, especially benefiting women and children in remote areas.
- The project targets shallow aquifers as sustainable sources of clean and safe water. So far, 10 wells have been successfully drilled in Jimma and 2 in Borena, supporting regions highly affected by droughts.
- Despite complex geology like crystalline basement rock in Borena, the borehole at Dambela Aba Chana yielded over 10 liters/second, and the Chabi site produced 4 liters/second continuously for 36 hours, demonstrating the success of a science-based approach.
